The world is mourning former South Africa President Nelson Mandela who passed away on the 5th December 2013 aged 95 years. Many acknowledge that Mandela changed the course of modern history. Indeed, his tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world and his humility, passion and humanity, earned him the love of millions across the world. Others have described the late Mandela as not just a hero of our time, but a hero of all time. Indeed, those who will continue to listen to his speeches will continue to draw true inspiration...
Through his many good qualities he inspired millions. In particular, his immense personal sacrifice for the sake of good causes, especially the fighting of injustice and oppression, his commitment to reconciliation and his forgiving spirit are among those reasons. Indeed, his ideals of a just society and a sense of duty to humanity are values to be emulated.
Emmanuel Mbennah, TWR's International Director for Africa, had this to say: "I came to South Africa from my home country Tanzania with my family as a doctoral student in March 1996, almost exactly two years since Mr Mandela's election as President of South Africa. Since then I have seen an increasing sense of harmony among South Africans across the colour spectrum. I believe it is God who used Mr Mandela immensely and enabled him to forgive and to focus his particular attention on reconciliation and the building of national unity of the hither-to deeply divided South African society".
TWR's global family shares the loss of the people of South Africa in a particular way as the TWR Africa Regional Office is based in South Africa since the early 1990s as well as our national partner, TWR South Africa.
As South Africans and the rest of the world go through this profound sense of loss, it is important to reflect on how we can cherish the late Mandela's wonderful values. Unfortunately, there is still much injustice and much suffering across Africa, and there are still wars and conflicts, human trafficking, and child abuse. Through people like Mr Mandela, God has shown us that we all have something significant that we give towards making the society a better place for children, women, those in poverty, and those without eternal hope. Even an ordinary person can achieve extraordinary things, if there is vision, willingness and sacrificial commitment. This life is but only a passage to a life to come for which we are all challenged as well as invited to prepare. For us then the greatest lesson we learn from the departure of our beloved, Madiba, is that we make considered decisions on how we spend this relatively short life and the significance of what we will be remembered for.
TWR's ministry in South Africa includes broadcasting programmes in Zulu, Afrikaans, Germany, and English, on medium wave and shortwave from Swaziland and Johannesburg and on an audio channel on DStv. Thus, TWR gives access to the sound Biblical teaching, and programmes on health and leadership, among others, to potentially millions of South Africans. Across Africa, TWR's broadcasts in more than 70 languages reach millions of children, youth, women and leaders, focussing on peace and reconciliation, health, the environment, leadership development, and presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and provision Biblical teachings for holistic transformation.
By the way the founder of TWR, the late Dr Paul Freed, was born in the same year as Mr Mandela.
