Several years ago, while travelling to a shop in northern Zimbabwe to buy cement, Douglas was held up by robbers. The men beat him severely, poured acid over his body and left him for dead. His friends found him and took him to the hospital where he spent an entire year of his life. Douglas endured many operations while waiting for his wounds to heal.
When he returned home, his physical wounds were healed, but the acid left permanent scars on his body-he lost almost 60% of his face! The most severe damage was to his eyes-the acid burned through his eyes and into his eye sockets, leaving him blind.
In excruciating emotional pain Douglas cried out, "What reason do I have to live? I should have died!" To drown his sorrows he started drinking and lived recklessly. One day, while in utter despair of life, Douglas reached over to his radio to block out life with loud music. Instead, God guided his fingers to tune in to TWR broadcasts where he found Jesus the healer of scars and pain.
As Douglas revealed his life story to the staff at the TWR Zimbabwe studios, he announced,"I came here to tell you that your broadcasts touched me. I am here because of your radio programmes. I was made blind so I could find Jesus." Douglas and his entire family are now believers in Jesus. This courageous man found God's grace sufficient for all his needs.
Throughout 2008 and 2009, TWR Zimbabwe staff persevered to keep the message of hope going out over the airwaves to people like Douglas and his family. Daily, programmes based on biblical principles with practical applications went out to various age groups in African English, Shona and Ndebele. TWR personnel put many hours of prayer and planning into programmes that address vital issues in Zimbabwe such as:
- Biblical truth
- Health concerns
"This is the moment to really build Zimbabwe through solid biblical radio programmes!" says Stephen Bapiro, Programme Director for TWR Zimbabwe. "We prepare programmes to reach the whole person, to help them improve themselves through biblical principles."
