Local Programming for Niche Audiences

Posted in OLD The Archive

For 12 years TWR has been broadcasting its programmes through Channel 155 on Southern Africa's Digital Satellite Television station (DStv). Recently however, this offering has been branded and launched as TWR Radio 155 with an important addition - three hours of programming in Afrikaans Monday to Saturday (10:00-13:00), and nine hours on Sunday (10:00-19:00)!

This awesome development has been made possible through a partnership between TWR Africa, Triple M Productions and TWR South Africa. The partnership launched as research from the South African Advertising Research Foundation (SAARF) revealed that a quarter of DStv viewers in South Africa are Afrikaans-speaking people.1

Afrikaans is an official language in South Africa.2 It is a language that developed from Dutch and is predominantly, though not exclusively, spoken by the white Afrikaner people group3 and the so-called Coloured people group in the Western and Eastern Cape. For them to receive preaching, teaching and exposure to the things of God in their mother tongue is a privilege which TWR is thrilled to provide.

With Triple M Productions supplying the programming content and marketing, and the other partners providing the infrastructure, excitement is in the air as to what massive potential this new brand might hold in reaching the people of Southern Africa with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

TWR Radio 155 provides listeners with a wide variety of programmes. Everything from chronological Bible-teaching to radio dramas and sports programmes featuring life coaching from Christian sports people is at their fingertips. One of the most popular programmes is Thru the Bible which is a five year verse-by-verse exposition of God's Word under the leadership of the legendary Dr. J Vernon McGee, which is now, of course, available in Afrikaans. Some programmes are repeated throughout the day so listeners can plan their listening around their busy schedules. Tuning in will not only be entertaining, but it will also help listeners grow spiritually.

If you're reading this and you have DStv, what are you waiting for? Tune in and be a part of the TWR Radio 155 community today! If you're not Afrikaans speaking, remember that TWR Radio 155 broadcasts English programmes during the rest of the day, with 30 minutes of German available too (there are almost half a million German's in South Africa!) 2

You can also check out www.twrradio155.org.za. TWR is waiting for you to join in and give your feedback to guide future developments. Furthermore, if you're a church or a Christian organisation, TWR is very keen to hear proposals from you. We are looking for a wide-spectrum of content that will speak hope to South Africans. So give TWR a shout if you feel called by God to get involved.
